As every iPhone user in Japan knows, Softbank has implemented it's own notification method of the offered i.softbank.jp e-mail account.
This setting allows a push notification to be delivered on the screen when a new incoming message has hit the server, while, strangely enough, not pushing the e-mail itself directly (one has to rely on fetching or manually force the download).
One of the biggest complaints about this system in heavy-email-texting Japan (e-mail being used instead of SMS) is that the notification comes without any sound or vibration.
This hasn't yet been addressed by new Softbank carrier settings, but if you have a Jailbroken iPhone -or are ready to do so-, here's a work-around.
Word of caution: do this only if you feel comfortable enough (and beware of some issues I mention at the end of this post). I have not tried it myself, as I keep my iPhone not jailbroken (yeah, yeah, I know...).
First, make sure that BossPrefs is installed. Then add the following new Cydia source by inserting this URL into Cydia - Manage - Source - Add:
http://homepage3.nifty.com/moyashi/cydia
Reload the package lists and find the SBankNotify package.
This latter preference tool will allow you to switch SBankNotify on.
The associated AIFF sound can be altered by finding the sbank.caf into /System/Library/Audio/UISounds/ and swap it.
Of course, this solution
isn't perfect: the vibration pattern needs to be adpated, the auto-lock can go awry, it seems to shut any iPod videos being shown if recevied and there are some conflicts with other apps in terms of sound.
Let's hope that Softbank comes with a proper solution soon. In the meantime, take a look on the original page of this walk-through [
link] for more (links to alternative melodies are in the comments, for instance). If you read Japanese, you might even be able to improve the faulty features on this tool.
Here's a video of the notification in action: http://jp.youtube.com/watch?v=BDrehjNzH5U
Now, let's wait for the IMAP IDLE protocol to be implemented in the iPhone, so that we get Gmail pushed !
